Cicada (Candied Critters)

Cicadas are amazing, amazing animals. And pretty in that alien, I’m-gonna-eat-your-face way that only insects can be pretty. I had a lot of options for this first wave of Candied Critters, but I knew one of them had to be a Cicada.

When it was time to paint the thing, I particularly enjoyed playing with the transparency of the wings and how they would obscure the body under them a bit. I think it gives the image a sense of solidity and “fake realism” that I like. Hope I nailed it and you’ll enjoy it, too!
