This piece is called "The World is on Fire," and it's born from the events happening outside our collective windows and the shockwaves my mother-in-law's passing brought to our home.
Lately, the world has felt like a raging fire. Like there was a spark in the underbrush, and suddenly a big gust of wind caught it, and now the trees and the grass just outside our window are on fire, and the air is thick with smoke, sparks, and the roar of fire, mixed with those otherworldly shrieks the trees let out when the fire cooks their sap and they sigh their souls out into the sky.
And in the middle of such devastation, walls mean nothing, windows mean nothing, borders mean nothing, and we're all caught in this doom loop, with a new signal of the end every way we look until we're no longer able to function properly and we just want to outrun the madness. But we can't. Because it's in our head, and whenever we go, we take the raging fire with us.
